Blood Fever by Simone Beaudelaire is a historical paranormal romance. The story introduces us to two scientists, who are working to find the cure for yellow fever. While researching yellow fever they come across a variant. This variant is a clue to scientist Philippe’s past. It becomes a race against time to find a cure for the variant. Will the information fall into the wrong hands? Will the budding relationship of the scientists stand the trials that await them?

I read this book several times. The story got better with each time I read it. I found that the book had a very unique spin on the classic vampire tale. It also put an interesting spin on real historical events. The first time I read the book I thought that Daphne was your standard damsel in distress with Philippe being the hero. As I read it again, I realized that it was quite the opposite. While Daphne did often times find herself in sticky situations that Philippe often tried to rescue her from, it was often Daphne’s ingenuity and steel will that ended up saving the day. Daphne is not a woman to underestimate.

This book does have trigger warnings and they should be taken into consideration before reading. I found that while they were difficult to read, it added a sense of realism to the story. Unfortunately life isn’t always rainbows and roses have thorns.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a unique historical paranormal romance. If you enjoy romance, paranormal, darker underlying stories and a bit of spice, this is the book for you.

Note: Cat Hipps is the narrator of the audiobook.
